Program 1

"THE FUNDAMENTS"

Taped at the São Paulo Museum of Art, Assis Chateaubriand, MASP, this program shows what the language of drawing is and that it is important to study it in order to understand the images that surround us: in art, in the press, in movies, in photography, and so on. It also shows what is discussed in the whole series and on what the student should concentrate to master this language.

Program 2

"BASIC COMPOSITION"

About composition, this program shows how to organize visual elements within a space, which is essential to any work that uses images. Explains the Golden Rule of Proportion and also shows what the correct posture is and how to hold a pencil, when one draws. It is the first program dedicated to the fundaments of drawing.

Program 3

"PROPORTION AND AXES"

Proportion, the use of central axes and how to measure using a pencil are the subjects of this program. Philip shows how to draw simple symmetrical objects (cylinders and spheres) by observation and that this involves a different type of thinking than usual, as all observation drawing does: that of the right side of the brain.

Program 4

"GEOMETRICAL FIGURES"

It is shown that any object, natural or fabricated, can be reduced to geometrical figures and Philip shows how to draw slightly more complex objects (a cone and a ring) as well as a bottle. Usage of proportional and intentionally distorted images in art is discussed, with various examples: expressionism, surrealism, manerism, anamorphosis and caricature.

Program 5

"LINEAR PERSPECTIVE"

What perspective is, how to perceive it and draw it, without the use of theory, is what this program discusses. Philip shows how to see bi-dimensionally and perceive slanted lines and the viewer follows his thinking as he draws a table. In another exercise, drawing on a piece of glass, he shows how Leonardo da Vinci developed perception of this fundament in his students.

Program 6

"THE CUBE"

In this program, Philip shows how to draw a cube, seen from various angles, and other objects with this basic form (buildings, houses, buses and furniture), which is fundamental to mastering linear perspective. It is also discussed how this fundament is used in other areas, such as cinema and computer graphics.

Program 7

"THE VANISHING POINT"

This program is dedicated to explaning the vanishing point theory and how to use it to draw linear perspective. Philip applies the theory to drawings done from observation in earlier programs, to show that perception of perspective is more important than theory.

Program 8

"TONAL PERSPECTIVE"

Philip shows that planes are criated in paintings through the use of the tonal perspective fundament. He shows how this works in landscapes, through taped images and in drawings and paintings. He also shows how this resource has been used in modern art to create planes within abstract images.

Program 9

"SPATIAL PERCEPTION"

In this program, Philip suggests various exercises that develop perception and appreciation of spaces and shows that this facilitates perception of an object's shape, the development of a painting, from the background to the foreground, and stimulates the brain's right hemisphere, enriching one's sense of depth and visual equilibrium.

Program 10

"COMPARING POINTS"

Comparing points is one of the least known fundaments, although it is as important as proportion for observation drawing. It is shown how to use vertical and horizontal axes to determine the location of objects and the relation of one object to another in any ambience and that drawing, using comparison of points, is more stimulating to the brain's right hemisphere.

Program 11

"LIGHT AND SHADE"

Beginning with this program, volume drawing is investigated as well as linear drawing. How light works and how to draw volume, technically, is shown, step by step and that it is very important to draw while observing, because perception of light is much richer when observed than that which a photograph captures.

Program 12

"VOLUME"

This program shows that the tone of a space around an object influences its visual aspect and how volume in a drawing is developed. It also shows how to draw complex objects, such as cloth and plants, step by step, and that studies of this type are essencial for figurative and realistic paintings.

Program 13

"ATMOSPHERE"

An extremely rich program in techniques, because it shows how to develop the atmosphere of a picture, working light and shade; demonstrations in oil on canvas, watercolour, soft pastels and pencil. The development of atmosphere in paintings is compared with atmosphere in cinema, television and comic books.

Program 14

"LINEAR EXPRESSION"

To show how to exploit graphisms in order to create expression, again various techniques are used: pen and ink, soft pastels and pencil. Linear expression is compared to expression created by different types of brushstrokes in painting and it is shown how to prepare canvas, in order to create the texture of your choice. Philip shows how to use music to develop expression and, also, how this fundament is used in graphic design and in advertising.

Program 15

"STRUCTURE"

In this program, one of the most creative fundaments is investigated, the structure of a composition, that determines the image's rhythm and predisposes the viewer to have certain feelings. Philip shows that the structure sustains the imagem, be it a painting, a photograph or a scene from a film and that it even influences product design.

Program 16

"THE CREATIVE PROCESS"

How to develop ideas and how the creative process works are the subjects of this program. Philip shows the development of an idea, from the conception phase to the actual painting of a picture and suggests various techniques to stimulate ideas. He shows that these same techniques can be used to stimulate creativity in any area.

Program 17

"COLOUR THEORY"

In this program, Philip explains how colour functions and how to mix pigments in order to obtain the colours with which one wishes to paint. This information is essencial if you want to use colour, in any field. Various examples of paintings, with different harmonies are shown.

Program 18

"USE OF COLOUR"

Philip shows how to perceive colour in Nature and in objects and how to transform what one sees into a painting and demonstrates that the key to colour harmony is knowing how to use chromatic greys. To exemplify this, the use of colour in fashion is compared to the use of colour in art.

Program 19

"COLOUR AND LIGHT"

Philip shows how to obtain the right colour of different skins, the greens in Nature, and the colour of shadow and what colours are used to paint white objects, using watercolour and oil on canvas as well as many examples of paintings.

Program 20

"THE FACE LOOKING FORWARDS"

The first program about drawing the human figure, beginning by drawing the face looking forwards, explaining the best way to draw the face from observation and the proportions, using a model. Philip shows that all the fundaments, investigated in previous programs, are used to draw the human figure.

Program 21

"THE FACE"

Using a model, Philip demonstrates how to draw the face in different positions: sideways, half-turned, looking up and looking down. He shows which proportions are altered and how to apply vertical and horizontal axes to position the face correctly.

Program 22

"LIGHT ON THE FACE"

How to create volume in a face, starting with a linear drawing, step by step, while drawing a model. Philip explains how this creates atmosphere and shows examples of drawings, paintings and comic books. He shows how to draw hair and, then, how to transform a volume drawing into a painting.

Program 23

"THE HUMAN FIGURE"

In this program, Philip shows the proportions of the human body, using a model, and how to draw it, using proportions, axes and spatial observation. It is also shown how to draw hands and feet, and how to use the technique of drawing a figure while using a doll as a model.

Program 24

"LIVE MODEL"

In this program it is shown how to draw a live model and how to take the best advantage of this exercise: which posescan be used as exercises and which for studies for paintings. How a person moves is also shown and various examples of the use of the human figure in paintings.

Program 25

"EXPRESSION IN THE FIGURE"

Philip demonstrates how to draw facial expressions and create expression using the movement of the body, musculature and hands. He discusses body language and shows how to read it, as well as facial expressions, and ends by investigating portrait and self-portrait painting, with various examples.

Program 26

"FIGURES IN LOCATIONS"

The subject of the last program of this series is how to draw figures in locations. As this involves all the fundaments of drawing - composition, perspective, light and shade, etc. - drawing the human figure itself, and implies that a picture is being developed, and therefore an idea, in this program everything that is treated in the other programs is recapitulated. Throughout the program a watercolour is painted, step by step, beginning with its conception.
